MGS4 - Konami Rakes It In

Now here’s some news that would have even the most brazenly anti-masochistic MGS gamer going, “Hurt me more, dawg!” Konami has confirmed that their eponymous stealth epic Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots sold about 3 million copies in only two weeks after its release. The company recently revealed that compared to the second quarter of last year, their revenue increased by about 17%, with income jumping up by 64% since June 12th (aka M-Day).

So what does that translate to? A cool $656.1 million in new revenue for this quarter. Interestingly enough, Snake managed the one thing even “perfect 10” Grand Theft Auto IV couldn’t — Selling more PS3s. Overall Konami Playstation 3 numbers went up from 1.3% last year to a whopping 57% this quarter. And just imagine — they probably haven’t even included sales from India (but then, who does?)!

Our kudos to Konami for making such a stellar title and earning the profit they deserved to cover this title’s insane production cycle costs, enormous publicity machinery and hiring the Beauty and the Beast babes.

Could things be any better for the game industry? Well, they could certainly be worse. Just try asking Sega and Namco-Bandai. Yet, somehow, a werewolf and knight-esque Sonic (in separate titles) still seem like goldmines, never mind the inevitable and insipid new Dot Hack game series to be released by the latter. The force is so not with these two right now.

MGS4: Guns of the Patriots Review - So long Snake!

by gSathe

Beware! Here there be spoilers!

metal-gear-solid-4-guns-of-the-patriots396048.jpgIt’s finally, painfully, over. I’ve played all the Metal Gear Solid games to some degree or the other, though I hadn’t played the original Metal Gear games. But I never managed to sit through any one of them completely.

I like sneaking games, and one of my favourite games to date is Thief: Deadly Shadows. But I never quite got the thing about the Metal Gear games, this ephemeral, ineffable truth which makes them the cultish experience that they obviously are to so many people.

I played most of the first game, and a little of the second, though unlike many, Raiden was not the reason I couldn’t see it through.

It was, I suppose, the endless rambling which reduced the game to… well… more an event than a game. That killed it for me. Click here to continue reading ‘MGS4: Guns of the Patriots Review - So long Snake!’

In our first part detailing the most memorable moments in the Metal Gear Solid saga, we looked back on some of the more action-oriented, politically steeped and revealing character twists. In this part, we’ll be looking at moments that are more personal and intricate.

As any MGS fan will tell you, the series is as much about the small touches as it is about the big. Here are five more of those happenings, along with some shattering events that affected the world of Metal Gear almost as deeply, if not more than, it’s gamers. Metal Gear Memories: Part 1

Metal Gear Solid, directed by Hideo Kojima and developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan, is one of the most successful and stylish franchises ever in gaming. However, come June 12th and it’ll all be over. No, the end of the world is not imminent (unless Jack Thompson takes a sudden interest in Patapon).

Metal Gear Solid 4 will be the series’ final installment after about 10 years of interactive story-telling, tense stealth segments and innovative boss battles. While hopes aren’t exactly dim about a comeback (after all, this is the same company who won’t let Dracula or their famed Castlevania franchise die), it’s safe to say that we’ll see the end of Hideo Kojima’s vivid, at times, insane, vision.

In this two-part countdown to MGS4, let’s take a look at the moments that shook Solid Snake, the world of Metal Gear and gaming itself as we knew it. Click here to continue reading ‘Metal Gear Memories: Part 1′
