Rumour: Insomniac’s Next Game a Multi-Platform, Survival-Horror

Filed under: Gaming News and Reportage 38 Responses

chimera from resistance

Insomniac Games first made a reputation for itself with the Spyro series, before moving onto Ratchet & Clank in the Playstation 2 era. It was only natural that people would associate them with cartoonish games but they stunned everyone with Resistance, a gritty sci-fi FPS with surprising elements of horror incorporated into the creature design. It shouldn’t be so surprising that Insomniac’s next title would be in the same mature vein but interestingly, their next effort will be going multi-platform.

According to our sources, development of the title is still very hush-hush and it hasn’t even been given a final name yet. However, it is certain the game will come out for the PS3 and XBox 360 in the foreseeable future. This will mark the first time Insomniac will depart from it’s tradition of Playstation-only development, having released 13 games over a period of…er, 13 years for the PS1, PS2 and PS3 systems (the PSP Ratchet titles were handled by High Impact Games). This track record of Insomniac lead many to believe that it was a first-party studio owned by Sony Computer Entertainment, who also published the majority of it’s games. However, as indicated everywhere and in official press releases, Insomniac is indeed a wholly independent console games developer. Stay tuned for more details.

boob

and who is this “our sources” you speak of?

i get the impression this is just a lie to get web traffic. good job.

HazeBlaze

I smell BS. Their next title is Resistance 3, as confirmed as an advertisement in an upcoming film. And it will be PS3 only! You should fire your ‘sources’.

Nick

So let me get this straight, you rag on Hiphop Gamer and PSXExtreme for putting forth unsubstantiated rumors and then you go ahead and do so yourself? Hypocrites, lol

theunleashed666

wow dude this is really pure bullshit and your ‘sources’ are fucking stupid

David Macphail

Yeah, Insomniac are working on Resistance 3 for Christmas 2010 and since Sony own the Resistance IP that franchise won’t be going multi – plat. Nice try, though.

Mitch

Um, he’s most likely talking about their new IP.

Crim

The article never said Resistance is going multiplatform. You live up to your name, Macphail.

Anyway, I don’t think their next game will be multiplatform (all signs are pointing towards Resistance 3 being the next game, and that’s obviously gonna be PS3 exclusive). The game after it, maybe. They said they were done with the Future series with Ratchet and Clank, and they have a North Carolina studio that hasn’t made any games yet, so who knows?

nutbear96

YEAH! BULLSHIT! I have two words for guy that wrote this article, GET FUCKED! Of course it won’t! The next game is Resistance 3 and it is set in NYC and will be released in 2010 (Insomniac release games EVERY YEAR, as said above, 13 games in 13 years). And as one of (if not the most) valuable Sony exclusive developers. Insomniac said they were interested in making a multiplatform game but where will they get their funding from? And anyway it DEFINITELY won’t be Resistance 3 that will go multiplatform (if it goes multiplatform at all…) because Resistance is trademarked by Sony!

LevelHead

Why are people actually upset over this? Does it really bother you if Insomniac wants to expand their userbase? The PS3 holds the smallest market for them out of the three main game consoles. The Xbox 360 is pretty much the same demographics so I find it a bit silly in this day and age we still have independent developers sucking the corporate tit. Games should be enjoyed by as many as possible, not horded by friggen teenage fanboys who’s game console is their life.

Kendo

Guys… have you ever thought that maybe they are working on Resistance 3 and a new IP. God none of you potential Sony fanboys (except you LevelHead), think of this.

theunleashed666

levelhead@ yes it is a good opition but look at it like this if insomniac went multiplatform who is going to publish it? not sony since they only publish a game on ps3 or psp or ps2 not microsoft since they only publish a game on xbox 360 or pc and no one else including EA, ubisoft,THQ,activision, then why would sony fund a multiplatform? for another console it’s stupid. and there funds would be short plus it would hurt there relationship with sony which i don’t see happening if you are such a gamer buy a ps3 and play that game on that console instead of waiting or hopeing that it comes to your console of choice take an example i wish to god that mass effect 2 was on ps3 but it is not so i have to play it on my 360 look at uncharted 2 most gamers who play there 360 more would love to play uncharted 2 but thats not happening so they have to play it on there ps3 it doesn’t seem like a good choice for them but it would be good but they are still sony only.

SPAz

Well, if this is indeed true, then people really shoudn’t be surprised. Given how Sony pretty much ignored R2 and every R&C games released on the ps3. I mean did any1 see a tv spot for R&C a crack in time??? or how Sony ramped up Killzone2 over R2, even tho the former was released 4 mnths later? the way i see it, Insomiac got screwed.
If this story proves false, then I’ll still enjoy their games on my PS3
BTW, check the title “Survival Horror” = new IP :)

Lucreto

@LevelHead

It is the US that count for the most 360 base. The PS3 is second in Europe and Japan behind the Wii. The Ratchet and Resistance are more popular in Europe than the US. The demographic is different on both machines there are more 14-17 years old on the 360 and the focus is shooters. The PS3 owners are the more the 20-25 range and are known for a more variety in the userbase.
It would be good but insomniac manta is to release a game a year and a multiplatform would take longer to make a game.

Willie Coleman

It seem Insomniac wants to try out a new IP and don’t want to have it in one basket. That a smart idea. Spread it over both console and get a better return.

Nathan Hale

I think the problem here is that because INSOMNIAC develop high quality AAA ps3 exclusive games, whether that quality will sustain alongside the 360, or whether they will have to downgrade, much like the FFXIII dilemma, unable to maximise the PS3′s potential at the expense of developing it for 360 also. As long as they dont mess with the Resistance franchise, i’ll be fine.

Kris

@ Levelhard

Business is much more than simply designing a product for the largest market. The amount of support Insomniac enjoys from Sony and the collaborative processes shared with Sony’s first party studios isn’t something every developer has access to. While a layman may see a larger potential userbase as the only way to move forward, having such a close relationship with Sony and Sony first party studios.

Your comments about how independent developers shouldn’t horde their wares is misplaced fanboyism right when you actually spout disdain for it. If you wish to enjoy exclusive titles, purchase the system. Its really rather simple.

@ Authour

I touched on it a bit up above when responding to Levelhard, but it applies in this as well. Insomniac, while Independent, has a fantastic relationship with Sony that they’re extremely happy to comment on. While it isn’t impossible for a multi-plat title from this talented studio, it is highly unlikely at the moment. With work confirmed on Resistance 3 and hints towards more R&C DLC episodes (like Quest for Booty), there doesn’t appear to be anything substantial pointing at a multi-plat title. However, their mastery of the Playstation 3 architecture would make a multi-plat title possible from a technical standpoint. It doesn’t seem likely, but I’m sure all of us will keep our eyes open, if only to see something new from the company that brought us some of the most enjoyable games on Sony consoles.

yourchupid

Well I think insomniac will go multiplatform one day but I am sure they wont any time soon. They ahve made a lot of profit on the sony platform enough to even expand an extra office in north carolina or dakota forgot which state. If you read that link you showed us it also says this so I don’t know.
“the games have combined to sell more than 32 million units worldwide. Insomniac Games is currently developing an unannounced title, exclusively for PS3.”

Nathan Hale

Not sure I believe this, as Insomniac has stated in recent interviews that they dont see a multiplatform title in the near future…

The new Ratchet hasnt sold very well, which is unfortunate. If Sony fanboys wanna complain about Insomniac going multiplat, they should buy more of their games.

Mike

It’s not out of the realm of possibility, but with next-to-no details and frankly a pretty random website reporting (sorry s-s.com), there’s no reason to take this seriously.

N4G fodder, move along folks.

Commodore

Resistance wouldn’t even sell well on the 360 because 360 people would rather kill aliens that are as scary as cute cuddly teddy bears with high-pitched voices screaming “Yahooo!!! Oh No!!! Ahhh!!”.

Anyone who thought this was Resistance 3 is an idiot.

Brian

Is your source for this foolish nonsense the HipHipGamer? Insomniac isn’t making games for the lousy 360. They only make games for Sony. I hear the next Halo will be a PS3 game though.

LevelerHead

@LevelHead

actually dude there is a very legitimate and simple reason as to why ps3 owners don’t like the idea of multiplatform.. When a game is developed for ps3 AND with 360 in mind, the technical potential is instantly compromised.. BECAUSE PS3 IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL.. Heavy rain, GoW 3, uncharted 2, killzone 2, the last guardian, GT 5 are all perfect examples of what CAN’T be done on ANYTHING ELSE but ps3

thefjk

It wouldn’t surprise me at all… they run a business and maybe Insomniac has reached a point where it just has to grow. Performance on Sony’s console alone might not be enough…

Still I think (maybe hope) that Resistance 3 will be a PS3 exclusive, to wrap it up and seal the deal, just like Ratchet And Clank Future: A Crack In Time was… and then whatever next game they make, has a chance of being a multi-platform game.

This story is totally Plausible!

Gladiator007

WOW… You guys are up in arms huh??? What’s so surprising about this. The PS3 hasn’t sold well since it came out. It takes way more resources to develop for it. It makes since that these guys would make a title multi-plat if they want to keep their doors open for business.

With the amount of money they put into making titles like Resistance2, for such a small return, they have no choice. Take for instance MW2, with twice as many people purchasing and playing the Xbox 360 version than the PS3.

The saddest part about Sony’s situation right now is where they started and where they are now. They went from first to last in no time. With such a huge install base with the PS2, one wonders how they could screw up such a good thing. Answer….the PS3.

Microsoft has done an amazing thing given the gigantic install base and head start Sony had. The one question I would ask to all the Sony execs, if they’ve still got jobs is: “How in the world could you muck that up!” I’ve said it before and will say it again: That’s like an NFL football team being up 42-0 at the half and loosing the game.
My PS3 brethren, you’ve got a choice to make, wait around for the PS4 to come along and try to get it right, or as the saying goes…

“Jump In…”

Me

Insomniac isn’t just one group of people there are three. Just like Rockstar and 2K. Just because one group is working on R3 doesn’t mean that they can’t be working on a multi-platform game. Insomniac did say that they are working on a new IP with the new development studio which could be developing a multiplatform series.

name

ah no comodore your the idiot.
the resistance IP is owned by sony, so its never going to appear on a M$ console.

back on topic, i cant see insomniac doing a multiplatform game, the amount of advice and support they get from sony and other first party studios they would loose all of that.
so is the extra sales worth it?

Commodore

I know that, I’ve played them. I know it’s a SONY exclusive. I’m just saying it wouldn’t sell well even though it’s not possible for it to be on the 360….Does that make sense? hahaha

Guest

It’s funny how no one has mentioned Insomniac Games’ second studio, where they in fact are working on something new.

It might actually be a ‘horror survival’ game, but I call BS on the multiplatform part. Like the article mentions; 13 years of experience on Sony’s consoles. Would they really go through the trouble of understanding the mechanics of another completely different console? I dunno, perhaps.

name

nah, i think it would sell quite well.
because 1 its a bloody good game.
2 shooters are extremley popular on the 360.
the only thing that could hamper its sales, would be that the previous installments have not been there so they might turn the cold shoulder saying “they skip us for the first 3 so why should we join now?”, or not buy it because it use to be a exclusive.
only thing pointing to this being plausible is their games have not been selling that well.
but as i said is the extra sales worth the risk of loosing all sonys support?
not only sony themselves but all sonys first party studios help each other, share tech.
insomniac makes a MP game they can kiss that tech good bye.

@Nick:

http://www.split-screen.com/2009/08/08/rumour-red-storm-working-on-graw-3-for-xbox-360/

Later, we find out Ubisoft registered a trademark for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Not GRAW 3 but it’s naive to think it’s not something in a similar direction.

http://www.split-screen.com/2009/07/15/rumour-rockstar-new-england-working-on-360-exclusive/

Later, we find out Bully composer Shawn Lee saying he’ll be scoring a Bully 2 in the near future. Rockstar said they don’t comment on rumour or speculation but last time I checked, neither did Sony when news of the PS3 Slim was circulating around the net.

We ran a story on an “exotic” gameplay in ACII (http://n4g.com/NewsPending-401931.aspx) and just a few days later, a sex mini-game is announced for the game.

http://www.split-screen.com/2009/11/14/rumour-gears-of-war-2-no-longer-360-exclusive/

Gears 2 coming to the PC, complete with video, pics and evidence of People May Fly (devs for Gears of War 1 on PC) working on an unannounced project since August 2009.

Let’s not forget the leaked screenshots of ODST, the concept arts for Uncharted 2, concept art from the Gears of War movie, etc. that we found.

So you want to know the difference between PSXExtreme, HHG and us? Credibility.

Look it up some time.

The rest of you can make what you will of our commitment to the same.

Also, this IP is a completely new thing. Bears no relation to Resistance or Ratchet and Clank.

Willie Coleman

So many of gamers don’t understand the nature of business. Insomniac has a great relationship with Sony. But with the cost of making a game going up, it hard to not to think of spreading it around. The staple games they created on the Playstation platform will remain there. But I feel they want to try something new. Test the waters with out having to take to much risk. Insomniac games have sold well but going Multi will give them a better footing to stay around a long time.

xbox rules your face

YO, just cause it’s one of your favorite software companies does not mean they don’t want to go to xbox.

If I sold as crappy as they did on the ps3 I would move over too. Ps3 fans are crazy as hell, look at all this garbage talk. This site has credibility, So go buy a xbox360 and stop being a sissy.

All this crap about xbox slowing ps3′s progress, I call BS as well, you ps3 fans are a joke and need to be straightened out..

I can’t wait when this comes true just as all of the other great games have went to xbox.

ONE. xbox 360 is way more cheaper to produce for

Two. Xbox owners actually support there games, look at call of duty. bioshock or most of any other game and ps3 is just lagging behind and even if xbox didn’t sell as much they would still make more money..

3. M$ has deep pockets, sony can only go so negative for so long..

4. Sony failed to support insomiac like they should have. Just like how they screwed me and many others on there ps2, when it broke 3 times and there was no warranty like xbox has. They told me to get f’ed and so I moved to xbox.
A good move I might add, I got mass effect, gears of war, Halo, Left 4 dead, Forza 3, Splinter cell, Alan wake, Ninja blade, and Almost anything that was worth anything on ps3 is know a multiplat…

So yea, sony F’ed up real bad. So as a developer and trying to keep your doors open at a hard time, going to xbox is a smart buisness move.

To all you sony fans, PS3 does break and when it does, guess what? You better hope you bought a extended warranty from where you bought it because sony could give a sh-t. It’s happened to two of my friends already. They have both moved to xbox. 3 yr warranty and on top of that the problem has been fixed. also I should say just because of your actions and crazyness on this site, Go f-ck your self your non american supporting japan basturd. if your american, u should move to japan and just see how f’ing cool it is. You will get spit on but go support there product.

Insomniac fan

I am not sure who sent you this news. But Insomniac will stay only for the PS3 until the next round of consoles.

Then when the PS4 and Xbox 720 come out Insomniac will work on the same game for more then one system not soon but later.

Plus the 2010 game is from the North Carolina branch and will not be R3 that game is coming out in 2011. So next year will be a new IP. Which when you see it is going to really rock your world. It really is great.

Jim

If you watch the gamescom motion controller trailer, theres a game that looks like a survival horror game, where your holding a torch. Could it be Insomniacs game?

Gd

Keep your xbox and your play stations give me a pc console version of a game any day. More players for pc multi player and the ability to play with game modifications.

Fuhrman

Just found your site with google. Thanks for the good read. I bookmarked you!
