Rumour: Halo Reach Development Finishing by July 2010?
Filed under: Gaming News and Reportage 12 ResponsesSome people may question Bungie’s development time when it comes to Halo, especially after news that the company created Halo 3: ODST in only 14 months. Well, that may get all the more uglier as we’ve uncovered info regarding just when the so-called “biggest game of 2010″ Halo: Reach will wrap up development.
Hong-Wei David Liu is a Sound Designer/Engineer who’s previous record includes 2 years with Big Huge Games as an Associate SD. He’s been working at Bungie since November 2009 as their Sound Designer on Halo Reach.
On checking out his site, we see the following post, dated 28th November 2009, which would be the time he’s already begun working for Bungie.
On reading the 2nd to last paragraph, we see the following lines:
“Work here is supposed to last eight to nine months here, as I’m under a contract to last until the end of the project which may or may not be at the end of July. Knowing the company I’d be working for, however, I don’t expect them to miss their mark.”
Since it’s announcement this past June at E3 2009, give or take a few months of development, this would apparently place the development time of Halo: Reach around more than a year, but less than two years. Now remember, it may or may not finish development around July 2010, and Bungie has not officially revealed when they first began working on Reach. However, it’s important to note Bungie themselves saying the game will release by Fall 2010. Hence, the game could be released some where between September and November.

Bungie did reveal how long Reach has been in development. They stated they started working on Reach in 2007 shortly after Halo 3 launched.
Seriously think some logic here. New engine and you think all this happen this past year? Seriously!!!
The bulk of the team for Bungie has been working on Reach. A SMALL team worked on ODST and they used assets they already had from Halo 3 which is why development wasn’t that long. Wow reasearch and logic really does work and could have saved you making this article.
What a dumb website for publishing this stupid article. Do your homework Halo Reach has been in development since Halo 3 you idiots. No cred
what a ridiculous article.
as said, Bungie have stated that development for Reach started just after Halo 3 – that was 2007:

“Day to day life hasn’t changed that much. We’ve been super-busy, obviously. We’ve finally been able to announce Halo: Reach, which has been in development right since the end of Halo 3.”
Wow, that was such a horrible article. Reach has been in development since right after Halo 3 wrapped up. By July, it would have roughly had a full 3 year cycle, much more than other “full”games like Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2.
Seriously, this is shameful. Do some research next time.
Except for the fact that you’re completely wrong with your speculations (people already pointed that out), there is nothing new here because:
a) He’s a sound designer. Even if the game itself will get some final tweaks after July 2010, the sound department will probably not be needed anymore – so that’s when his contract ends.
b) Bungie is a superb studio, and they are able to use iterative development that allows them not only fast development cycle, but also the ability to make a game engine playable YEARS before the final product is out. Halo Reach is already playable in a closed internal beta, and an open multiplayer beta will be available to everyone more than half a year before the final game is out.
As others have pointed out, it’s been in the makings for much longer. It doesn’t take years for the sound designer. They are not part of the whole development cycle. It’s like making a movie for 9 months and then spending months adding special effects. Plus when they say the project will wrap up that means then it will go into testing and the final touches which will take a few months. This game will be out in November next year. A lot of games are done months before they are released. They just use that time to tweak it and test for bugs and stuff.
As others have pointed out, there are several flaws in logic in the article. There’s been far too much jumping to conclusions. Not much needs to be said other than that.
and a you obviously did not read the article because it says “Work here is supposed to last eight to nine months here, as I’m under a contract to last until the end of the project”
meaning as soon as the game goes gold he is out of contract but till then hes with bungie.
i would not be surprised though because bungie have been working on this since 2007.
thats roughly 3 years of development thats more than enough time to get a new engine going and make the improvements they wanted.
not everyone needs 5 years to do that.
cough GG, cough polophony digital, cough quantic dream.
