Forget Mass Effect: New, Exclusive Sci-Fi PS3 Title in Development
Filed under: Gaming News and Reportage 19 ResponsesBy Nike Okami
I gander and gaze at specimens like PSXExtreme and HipHopGamer. They push out rumour after rumour without a hint of credence, and expect the fanboys (and fans) to swallow it, unquestioningly. “Kojima’s on the PS3 Again, Dawg??”, “Top Secret New PS3 Title That We Can’t Tell You About But Thanks for All the Hits!” and so on. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to these “real” and “reputed” sources of news, there is a Playstation 3 title, exclusive to the platform till now, based on a brand new IP waiting to be published. So the real question is not what it is, but do you want it?
Of course, we’ll get 2 or 3 things concerning this IP out of the way first.
The developers: Steambot Studios and Bluepoint (Blast Factor).
The title: Exodyssey.
From the developer’s official blog:
“Steambot Studios and Bluepoint Games (Blast Factor), have recently collaborated on a proof of concept real-time demo on Sony Playstation 3, based on the universe of Exodyssey. The prototype was done in a very short period of time and shows our intentions in terms of graphics and gameplay… We are now looking for a publisher and potential investors to start working on this next action-adventure AAA title. Bring it on!”
Additionally, Steambot talks of the game at this past July’s CG Con 2009
“People even had a 1st glance at the ‘Exodyssey video game proof of concept’ that Austin’s Bluepoint helped develop, running on a PS3!”
And then again at official launch party for the franchise:
“The event was a success, more than 200 guests for an evening of visual thrills. Books and DVDs on sale, live painting, book signing, exclusive video projection of the Exodyssey world, good music, drinks and food, and the presentation of the Exodyssey game demo…”
There are more than enough indications that they’re intent with going forward in developing an Exodyssey game, which again, is currently exclusive to the PS3.
It’s hard to really define what Exodyssey is. Originally an illustrations book, called the “visual development of an epic adventure by Steambot Studios” that tells the story of a future humanity who’s roots are quietly being snuffed out and a protagonist who holds the key to finding out why. It can best be described as a graphic novel featuring the talents of concept artists behind such games as Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, Far Cry 2, Splinter Cell and Deus Ex 3. Over 500 illustrations spanning 5 worlds and 176 pages to showcase the story of this brand new universe. The book and game are only the first few pieces of this new universe, according to Steambot Studios.
And so I put forth this interesting proposition to all PS3 fans – with a project like this coming through (and yes, more than likely, the game will be based off the illustrations seen in the teaser), who needs Mass Effect for the PS3? Pray that a big time publisher (you listening Sony?) has already picked this up, or is at least considering the same.

Heh, nice find .
stupid indians!!
Not really buying how every exclusive on PS3 is considered AAA. Only a few are what I;d consider truly AAA like Uncharted and Uncharted 2 for example.
Sony have the best 1st party studios and all, but Mass Effect 2 will rule 2010.
I agree concerning Hip Hop Gamer, he is a one who spreads rumors and makes up some himself and then when they’re proven false just goes on to ignore them beginning a new set of rumors. He does get some things right, but usually is just spreading those rumors from credible sources, even I could do that!
HHG claimed GTA IV on PS3 would see more episodes and they;d be on the PS3 (and maybe 360), he even claimed there would be 2. Yet R* said their 2nd DLC was the final on Game trailers TV with no mention of the PS3 getting anything more than the standard GTA IV.
Oh yes i speak for all ps3 owners when i say that this will be awesome!
I really love the art style guys, and I would enjoy to see a AAA game published and produced from this as a core. Best of luck!
but your forgetting hes also got heaps right.
anyone remember the slim debacle?
he said the slim was confirmed in june in his review episode for infamous.
as for PSXE your a idiot hes not spreading rumors ben was shown the game, and because of NDAs cant talk about it till announcement.
just like the COD MW2 single player campaign, heaps have seen it but its under wraps till release.
does it mean thats a rumor?
seriously that has to be the stupidest thing i have ever heard some one say.
congrats!
I feel sorry for whoever said Mass Effect 2 would rule 2010. Anyone who thinks ME2 is better than Final Fantasy XIII or White Knight Chronicles must have problems………….
Why even bother calling out Mr Dutka from PSXExtreme? That particular article you were refering to was fine, hes been given an inside scoop which is something that comes from trust. The source trusts him as a journalist not to reveal anything until its ok and the journalist trusts the source is speaking fact. If anything its got people talking about what it could be.
@David
I am not a fan of Mass Effect but it will be huge. Final Fantasy XIII will turn heads too but the idea that White Knight Chronicles will? It got more reviews in Famtisu and the wait had dragged on. If you want a good RPG right now, how about Demon’s Souls. I really doubt Exodyssey will be anything spectacular.
Let me get this out of the way – nice find on Exodyssey. Did you follow up on it, get in touch with the Blue Point or Steambot at all?
And is it really necessary to belittle others? It just makes you look bad. Concern yourself with your site and making it the best it can be, forget the rest.
@damnyou
dude wtf? wtf has indians gotta do with all this?
Martin. Thanks for showing us what an idiotic Mass Effect fanboy you are.
Killzone 2 – AAA
MGS4 – AAA
LBP – AAA
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune – AAA
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – AAA
Demon’s Souls – AAA
Resistance: Fall of Man – AAA
Resistance 2 – AAA
inFamous – AAA
Ratchet & Clank Future: TOD – AAA
Ratchet & Clank Future: ACIT – AAA
And Mass Effect 2 will rule 2010? Sorry but here are the games that will rule in 2010, all owned by Sony:
God of War 3
Heavy Rain
MAG
The Last Guardian
Gran Turismo 5
White Knight Chronicles
Modnation Racers
Agent
Resistance 3
David Jaffe’s new game
Maybe someone ought to start a petition towards Sony to get them to pick up this game. I’m aware that many petitions are stupid and ultimately it just depends on if the publisher thinks they’ll make money off the game, but at the same time petitions are great for getting the word out on issues. The petition itself wouldn’t necessarily change anyone’s mind, but other websites may pick it up and buzz for the game would spread faster through word of mouth.
Needles Kane, I’m as excited as every other PS3 owner for GoW3, The Last Guardian and MAG, but Mass Effect 2 really does have a shot at being the (at least one of the) best game(s) of 2010. I loved ME1 and it sounds like ME2 is very similar except they’re fixing the few flaws of the first.
We will see, but my money is still on ME2.
Games looking forward to next year: ME2, Splinter Cell, Alan Wake, Halo: Reach, Crackdown 2, Dark Void, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear Solid: PW possibly Metal Gear Rising etc
Talking about other sites only shows how small you really are, and considering that you post something that’s already been posted only shows that you have no inside connection.
Get some cred before you talk about someone.
p.s. since you “moderate” comments, I know that you’re insecure, seeing that you remove all negative posts regarding your site.
Lame.
Grow some balls, splitscreen.
I’m not going to forget about an established game for one of Sony’s exclusives. Forget about the 20 and under demographic, they buy anything. Half of Sony’s exclusives are piles of crap and Mass Effect 2 is basically a can’t miss. It’s tough to get good info these days. So many little kids taking fanboy allegiances solely based on the fact that mommy will only buy one system for them, and on the other side it’s the companies themselves telling rumors and lies to boost there own cause in any way possible. Add those two factors with the weirdos out there like… well most of the people who publish on N4G… and you have chaos stated as facts.
Totally agree with calling out that Idiot Dutka on PSXExtreme, as well as DigDugGamer. I never really understood how people can still believe such uncredible sources.
But to the point of this article: I don’t really see how this can be even called a game. To the best of my understanding these are just concept art shots waiting for a publisher to actually pick this up and start developing a game. It’s still vaporware until someone actually does something with it.
And I don’t even see the point of comparing this to Mass Effect: They mention an action adventure title here, not an RPG-shooter title. And even then they don’t really have anything to show when going against arguably the best RPG developer in the world (and I only say arguably because of Bethesda). The only thing close to Mass Effect in terms of quality the PS3 will get is just another game from Bioware: Dragon Age. The good news is that it’s coming real soon
What does this opinion piece have to do with Hip Hop Gamer? I don’t get it. You talk about a rumor on another site and complain about someone who had nothing to do with it.
