Namco Discusses Soul Calibur’s “Breast Bones” in Japanese Tech Mag
Filed under: Gaming News and Reportage One ResponseTomonobu Itagaki and his former stalwarts at Team Ninja made “breast physics” the norm in fighting games with their Dead or Alive series. Tecmo’s Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 continued that legacy, introducing a “shaking” mechanic that would doubtless have allowed for some useful purpose when playing as the female shinobi. Namco-Bandai just recently enunciated on the physics governing their female cast in Soul Calibur IV. Thankfully, they recognized the need to tone things down a bit in the name of realism.
“In both Soul Calibur IV and Soul Calibur Broken Destiny, everything, including fabrics, is animated by ‘bones’.
On the PS3, there are two separate bones in each breast, giving a total of four, and it is these which give rise to breast motion, whereas on the PSP for the sake of load reduction things had to be simplified. We managed to obtain satisfactory results with only one ‘bone’ across both breasts.
Swaying breasts may be most enjoyable, but from time to time we are warned that they move a little too much.”
Indeed. So now when you see the miracle that is not each of a digital woman’s assets moving independently of each other (DoA: Extreme 2, you have scarred me forever), you know who to thank.

I have no complaints about the motion, in fact, I quite like it.
