It’s Official: FFXIII Has Better Japanese Voice Acting
Filed under: Gaming News and Reportage 23 ResponsesNot that Square-Enix actually put up a big banner saying so, but any one who even slightly cringed at the whiny shenanigans of Final Fantasy XIII’s voice cast will doubtless agree: This game would have been better with just a Japanese VO (voice over) and subtitles rather than the team going the whole hog with an English localization.
Before enunciating on the bad (and the missed), let’s start with the good. Zach Hanks will be playing Snow Villiers, with the Japanese VO handled by Daisuke Ono. Anime fans will doubtlessly recognize the latter for his amazing track record which includes light comedy fair like Minami-ke and legendary drama anime like Air TV. What does Hanks have going for him? Besides playing Lars in Brutal Legend aside Jack Black, he also voiced tough talking sniper Captain MacMillian from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Though officially unconfirmed, comparing voice overs from other characters and Snow’s is enough to tell you who’s who.
Now for the bad. Oerba dia Vanille’s Japanese VO is done by Yukari Fukui aka FLCL’s Junko “Miya-Jun” Miyaji aka the Fooly Cooly herself (and if that’s not an indicator of her worth, kindly drown yourself). The English version of Oerba voiced by Georgia Van Cuylenburg. Efforts to find a single production of hers worthy of mention failed – unless you’re a big fan of Finding Nemo’s Submarine Voyage in which she’s the narrator.
The English VO of Lightning, the protagonist of Final Fantasy XIII, is yet to be confirmed. However, Japan gets – wait for it – Maaya Sakamoto. That’s right. The famous J-pop artist with numerous successful singles and albums to her credit. The versatile anime voice actress who worked in acclaimed properties like Vision of Escaflowne, Rahxephon and Kanon. Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and Crisis Core. Kairi from the Kingdom Hearts series. It’s highly unlikely that a voice actress with as much experience and diversity as Sakamoto even exists in North America or Europe.
It’s left to the listeners to decide which voices they can stomach better. However, for a company which united the entire cast of the Disney universe along with Haley Joel Osment, Christopher Lee and Rachel Leigh Cook (to name a few) for Kingdom Hearts II, this feels like a big step down. Especially since this is the biggest Final Fantasy game yet.

If Maaya Sakamoto is a goddess, I’d worship her. =D
Guys, your voice actor for Snow is wrong. Sorry.
Here’s a tip: He voiced someone in Tales of Vesperia. Can’t say any more as I’m under an NDA, but I worked on the localization.
Yeah, we (at least us who have a brain) know that english voiceovers will suck mayor arse.
Japanese voiceovers would be possible on PS3, but thanks to 360, us ps3 gamers will have to play the shitty game in english… fuck you microsoft.
First of all, Maaya Sakamoto is not Kairi’s VA.
Second, this is weaboo bullshit.
Actually, PS3 owners get both language sets, so we get Japanese with Eng subs
I hate how they removed the Japanese voice acting in the Playstation 3 version simply because they couldn’t fit it all on Xbox 360 shitty DVD.
Sony put a Bluray player in the PS3 for a reason.
God I can’t wait till Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
I hope it has Japanese voice actors.
Dude, you’re a stupid, fucking loser. Same to the guy who left the first comment.
Dude stfu. Its just voices and English sounds great. As long as the voices arent annoying thats perfectly fine with me. I dont need a Japanese voice acting. Im in America and so arent alot so deal with it.
Since when does the not being known make you bad? I don’t care about the VA background it’s about HEARING the voices that matter. I like English and Japanese VA equally and I don’t have a problem at all. I prefer Lightnings US VA, Sazh JP VA, Snow’s are equally good and I like Vanille’s VA.
Again their old jobs are nice, but cmon. This US vs JPN Voice acting battle is gone on long enough.
Goddamn weeaboos.
I think SQ-EX could have placed a double audio track, but they’re gonna wait 6 months to release an international version to suck off more money. Hope the jap audio track gets up as downloadable content.
“However, for a company which united the entire cast of the Disney universe along with Haley Joel Osment, Christopher Lee and Rachel Leigh Cook (to name a few) for Kingdom Hearts II, this feels like a big step down.”
I think it was Disney that helped bring those voice talents to the game.
WHY SHOULD THE FILTHY AND STINKY CARE ?!! AND DO YOU KNOW THAT THE JAPANESE HATE COW WORSHIPPERS aka INDIANS SOO FUKN MUCH THEY DESPISE AND SPIT ON ANY INDIAN THYE SEE !!
YOU THIRD WORLD UGLY AND THIS SITE IS AS STUPID AS THE UGLY LOGO ABOVE !!!
SHUT YOUR HOLES STUPID STINKY FILTHY BULLwood NATION !
Just put subtitles on the japanese version and I’ll import this for sure.
To those morons that are criticizing this article: hey, dumb asses, original Japanese voices will be MUCH MUCH better then english voice overs. That’s the reason you morons don’t speak other languages. You get everything in english.
Just because a voice actor is established doesn’t mean that they’re voice is better suited to a specific character than another.
From watching the last english voiced trailers I genuinely believe that this is the best voiced RPG to date.
Lightning has that female tone yet still has that forcefulness her character needs
Snow has that ‘I’m a nice guy tone’ mixed with a bit of that leadership role (although we all know Lighting is the real leader)
Sazh doesn’t sound like a stereotypical black character like so many people portray them as. I’m glad he’s the funny yet deep father figure. Its a good change.
Even though he’s only said one line I really like the sound of Hope’s character. He’s got that mature sound to him while still sounding young. Kind of like Roxas in a way.
My only concern is Vanille so far. Her voice sounds a bit kid-ish and squeaky so far. But its still early days.
This dude is a stupid weebo.
This games sales would half if they didnt put English VO in. I wouldnt but it either.
It’s funny that most of the people here complaining about not buying a Japanese VO game with subtitles because they’re English, don’t even know their own native language well enough to spell and use proper grammar.
What bullshit is this article?
“This actor is not well known and therefore is bad?” That’s pure idiocy. The Japanese cast is gonna suck for the fact that the Japanese can’t act excluding a few of them. Look at any anime and listen to the JP VA’s, they don’t even sound like they’re trying to act. They know that as long as their voice matches then they’ll be loved. Which is idiotic.
Holy flipping shit. I raged so much reading that.
‘that a voice actress with as much experience and diversity as Sakamoto’
Diverse? THOSE CHARACTERS ARE ALL OF THE SAME ARCHITYPE! Gooooooood loooooooorrrrrrrrd. Fuck I hate weeabooos.
I’m of Japanese descent, and I can speak both english and japanese, and I agree that this is a nonsense article. First, we don’t even know all the english VA’s, and even if the JPN VA’s are famous, it doesn’t add to the quality of the voice, or how well it fits the character. The English VA’ can be just as good.
And you wanna know something funny? In Japan, a lot of people think that English voices are better (according to my brother). So, everyone is pretty damn delusional.
Now, now, the opinion in itself of possibly preferring and wanting the Japanese audio track included with the game is a perfectly acceptable notion. I’m disapointed myself, but I’m still fairly confident that for a production as big as FFXIII, that a quality English track will be provided (FFXII’s dub was, for the most part, a really good effort).
However, yeah, this entry in question reeks of weaboo. Particularly the paragraph worshipping Yukari Fukui for her work on FLCL, possibly mistaking her for another character, but probably just going crazy over the fact that she was even in it (because she just had a minor role as the teacher). Beyond weaboo. Goddamnit, if you want to praise her, at least pick a REAL role of hers. And fuck, I wouldn’t even complain much if this was at least over her role in something like Gurren Lagann and ignoring any of her prior work.
@Baal
Only reason why you say that is because you can’t understand both languages. If you bother learning other languages, you would start to appreciate the original language, not only that but understand some of the things lost in translation
