The Next MGS: And So it Begins…

cover-pic2If you’ve been tuned into the Game Developers’ Conference 2009, then the obvious is an understatement: This is a Sony affair. A new Zelda for the DS, motion controls for the 360 (courtesy of a third party) but for the most part, it’s the Sony fans who should be really excited. Besides more gameplay footage from God of War III and the announcement of a new Ratchet and Clank, Sony certainly held the floor on a high note. Of course, the earnest show-stopper was legendary designer Hideo Kojima’s key note speech at the conference where he unveiled a teasing image of the next Metal Gear Solid. As with most teasers, this is once more a tribute to the fact that Kojima and Konami can pretty much toss out as little as they like and the conspiracy theories will begin flying out of the woozoo.

metal-gear-solid-raiden-or-somethingOn close examination of the image (courtesy G4TV), you’ll see the silhouette of what looks to be a sword carrying entity, something most MGS fans can associate with characters like Grey Fox and Raiden in their ninja avatars. So, obviously, aside from the naming that implies Solid Snake is still present in some way or another, rumours are now flying about this supposed “Metal Gear Raiden” where you’ll play as cyborg ninja Raiden. Why? Well, he’s the only ninja character still alive (despite Raiden’s human turn at the end of Guns of the Patriots) and he was pretty bad-ass in MGS4. How this automatically translates into an Metal Gear Solid game that wouldn’t be a Ninja Gaiden rip-off much less an actual game is beyond me but people are looking at this one image and automatically assuming it to be a Raiden’s first star outing. Kind of like how they viewed that strange little message on a forum titled “A Next Metal Gear is…?” and from the icons indicated, summarized that the next title could be 360-bound (this was later revealed to be Metal Gear Solid Touch).

Honestly speaking? That one image could just as easily look like Big Boss in his hey days as a samurai as it could look like cyborg Grey Fox or even Raiden from MGS2. Konami says to wait till E3, a time when actual details will emerge. Until then, simply pointing, connecting and theorizing is the same old game we’ve been playing with every new MGS pic and trailer since the first game.

Yeah, we have no way to really know for sure right now. I think it could have been a joke, though.
In MGS3:S’s Secret Theater, you could see videos where Raiden was hinted to be the main character in MGS4, and even times when he tried to kill Snake just to take his position. And, in one of the first trailers for MGS4, Raiden sits on the ‘main character’ seat (IIRC), and then is beaten off by Snake. I think this is just an ongoing joke.

Nope MGS as Raiden not quite, although I have a feeling they’ll push Liquid into the picture as Snake this time…

I think one thing that people are overlooking is that Kojima said he will be releasing announcements about his next project at E3.. where is everyone getting the idea that MGS5 is his next project? He is claiming to be an overseer. I wouldnt be surprised if there is very little to no information about MGS5 at E3.. i still feel its too soon, but I guess i could be wrong. I just think people are jumping the gun on expecting an MGS related announcement at E3..

It’s not up for debate, it IS Raiden from MGS4. Look at the feet. Grey Fox didn’t have feet like that, nor did Raiden in MGS2. The only character i’ve ever seen with feet like that is Raiden in MGS4.
Now, whether it’s an indicator that he’s the main character is debatable.
