The SixAxis controls on the PS3 were brought back into focus for me while discussing Mirror’s Edge with another gamer, and anyone who’s tried to actually play a level using that god-forsaken system, knows what an exercise in self-debasement that is. It only complicated things and the question was asked: If you’re going to include a control scheme that (a) Is not the least bit of fun to use, or (b) Will doubtlessly be toggled off in favour of a better one, why include it at all? Why not focus on making the game itself better, maybe some more exclusive content or some extra sheen? Granted, it’s lots of fun to play Motorstorm drunk using the SixAxis…but alcohol can solve only so many of life’s problems.
Then this recent news popped up: Sony Computer Entertainment America has made Trophy support mandatory for all titles from January 2009. I’m not comparing the quality of these two; rather, I’m not ribbing the Trophy system because it’s being pimped like the SixAxis. Rather, I find it odd how Sony feels that it should now force even its in-house developers to include support for its console features. Be it something abysmal or a reward for continuous play, Sony has never showed this level of, dare I say it, desperation before.
Take the case of this report in October 2007, when Sony spent the week, literally, begging third party developers not to abandon the PS3 for the Wii or 360. This coming from the same Sony that once stated before the release of the Gamecube and the original Xbox, “The question is not who will be No. 1, but who will be No. 2″, indicating that the PS2 had the top spot all sewn up.
There are “bashings” and then there are hard truths. If Sony wants to succeed, it should take half-baked efforts like the SixAxis to task. It’s a little too soon to hope Sony will discontinue this altogether – after all, the SixAxis was an ill-fated answer to the Wiimote’s motion sensor control and later, a serious flipping off at force feedback support.
Perhaps the company should own up to playing the laborious, unsatisfied competitor and not the complacent, arrogant leader in 2009. Because it’s no longer the age of simply pleasing your market, but more about expanding it.
Full disclosure time: The author of this piece is a Sony fanboy and desperately wants it to live up to its own legend, and make him fall in love with it all over again.

You must work for Microsoft because your article clearly has hatred strewn throughout. And that is a shock considering your website hosts Gay advertisments. You’ll grab a man’s pole but the Sixaxis controller is what sickens you?
Just STFU with these lame articles.
GO PLAY you RROD 360.
Enjoy.
lol…running low on good article ideas?
when all else fails bash sony…that seems to be the motto among journalists these days. And not just gaming journalists either.
1.) mandatory trophies isn’t desperate. It makes sure gamers get more out of there games and establishes a trademark for the system. Something that you know you get with a ps3 game.
2.) Bad sixaxis controllers are the developers fault not the controllers fault as shown by how well they worked with Folklore and Ratchet and Clank. Also with how well they work with Killzone 2.
Nice try buddy
the only thing is…sony doesnt want you back,
Panther: Thank you for your insightful comment. It is always a pleasure to read a well thought out and articulated response to an article posted on this site. Clearly you have given this a lot of thought and arrived at the frightfully intelligent conclusion, that poles have been grabbed because there are ads on this site which support alternative lifestyles. Also, one can see why that might lead you to believe that Ravi works for Microsoft. Astute observation indeed
Clearly we need more of your ilk writing in. In fact, writing for us. After all, you spelt “strewn” correctly. I could gush over you all evening. But then again, it would just make as much sense as your comment. Next time you feel like posting something, make sure it actually makes sense? It’s called an opinion. Sadly for you, people have them. And they are allowed to state them. It’s not a personal attack. We don’t want to fling dog poop at you and your PS. Honest injun. Talking about a controller and issues that one might have with it, cannot be translated into “I hate PS. Microsoft rules. Wii isn’t even a word”. Highlighting issues that certain individuals might have with a particular product does not instantly mean that every other product is amazing or faultless. Try to be objective. Just try. And if you fail, there is a penis reduction ad on the site as well. Maybe you can work your magic with that. Your comment is as redundant as my replying to it is pointless.
Noob: Same goes for you.
We thank you for your patronage
Well Ravi, instead of getting on Sony’s back you should be on the backs of these developers and publishers that insist on making everything else in the game the same on both platforms.
You should consider jumping on Rockstar for cutting the PS3 version of GTA4 because of the DVD9 version. You should get on these companies for not availing themselves of the PS3s ability to handle a greater number of players in MP. And those are just for starters.
You are blaming Sony for the PS3 not getting additional material when Sony had nothing to do with the Sixaxis decision.
Kali lets be serious here. This guys opinion can’t really be taken seriously because he conveniently leaves out all the ps3 games that use sixaxis very affectively while basing his entire argument on just the Mirror’s Edge controls. There are fanboy comments and they there are hard truths. This guy should take this half-baked article and feed it to ppl who have no business commenting on games like cnn and kotaku. Cuz telling it to people who know better will just get him bashed. Its a little too soon to tell if journalists like this will ever get off the “bash sony” bandwagon. After all this ill-fated attempt for hits is getting old. But I will be back to watch him eat his words when Sony, “the complacent, arrogant leader”…rises from the doubt for the 3rd generation in a row.
“Desperations”? Wtf are you talking about, its called a fucking standard. People asked for the trophies to come, so they get it.
I’m not even sure what are you trying to say…. I mean, you say that Sony is desperate because they added trophies and some motion degree to the sixaxixs? Then Microsoft must be shitting their pants because they copied the Mii’s from the Wii and they have obligatory achievements for all games don’t you think? Their system cost less than a Wii for god’s sake!
But the real question here is, what are you trying to say? What if Sony’s desperate or not? What difference it makes? Because I look at 2009 and most of the good games are on Sony’s console exclusively…. There’s God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, White Knight Story, Demon Soul, Quantum Theory and I’m pretty sure there are a couple of more surprises. This is what you should be focusing about instead of whining for stupid things like if Sony’s desperate or not, or if the sixaxixs is taking too much time of devs (nobody is using it anyway).
Your rant is total nonsense.
this guy hasnt been out much….a xbot in disguise…go get a life move out of your mommy house and see the world.
I have to run with Itachi here – I’ve been playing flight games since before the first Battle of Britain (the game, not the actual event) and enjoyed playing through Blazing Angels with Sixaxis controls. Other examples of successful implementation include Flow (wonderfully enjoyable and accessible due to it’s sixaxis controls), High Velocity bowling (which most reviewers rated a better game than it’s Wii counterpart), Warhawk (the Sixaxis made for more control when flying), Uncharted (once you’re used to it, throwing grenades that way was kinda cool), Ratchet and Clank, Blast Factor and Folklore. It is possible to play Motorstorm pretty well with them as well. The big issue is (like with anything) is that people don’t take the time to learn motion controls on the PS3 as they have the standard control-pad option right in front of them. I actually found the Wii’s controls a little hard to get used to at first (Qudos to Nintendo for getting everyone started on the horribly ‘motion-mashy’ Wii sports, where no-one will notice the lack of precision) as well – it’s just a case of learning a new scheme. That’s not to say that some developers won’t implement it poorly – the same goes for any control scheme (and again, there are a litany of games on the Wii that are a wonderful example of motion control gone wrong) – but using Mirror’s Edge (where the motion controls are pretty peripheral in the first place as the primary justification for arguing that motion controls are rubbish is pretty poor argument construction.
This brings me to an even bigger hole in the piece – the argument. It’s incoherent, unclear and poorly supported. Are you arguing that Sony is forcing ‘even’ (this is a strange use of the word even in the context of the argument) it’s first-party developers to include motion control (and then use Mirror’s Edge (third-party) as an example?!). Are you arguing motion controls are rubbish (one game isn’t exactly taking the broader view here!)? Are you arguing Sony are desparate? Are you arguing that Sony are arrogant? The article reads more like a stream of (semi-) consciousness than a serious piece of writing trying to make a point.
My final concern is that if you are really, truly, a Sony fanboy, go and play the thing! I’m a very happy PS3 owner that hasn’t picked up a 360 yet because I still haven’t finished playing all the games I want to on the PS3, and unless I can rip through my “that looks good, I’d like to play that” list before March (and with the likes of Fallout 3, Valkyria Chronicles and Motorstorm:Pacific Rift on the list, I’ll have my work cut out for me), then 2009’s releases will keep me playing catch-up for a while yet! Any gamer who can’t have a whole lot of fun on a PS3 or a 360 needs to take a long, hard look at themselves, and then probably get another hobby (there are plenty out there – if gaming isn’t your thing play sport, read books, do some community work, take up line-dancing – but if gaming isn’t doing it for you don’t get bitter, take up a hobby that does!)
Now I’ll go back to playing Mirror’s Edge and yes, I have turned the motion controls off, but the fact that they are there doesn’t make it a worse game!
Kali: Thank you for your prompt and entertaining response. It is nice to see that others are able to detect the subtle relationship between MS fanboys and the gay community. I didn’t think others were able to see the connection.
Seriously though, I was wrong by linking the ads posted on this site to the author of this slanted article. My connection made about as much sense as linking mandatory Trophy support to the authors distaste for the SixAxis controller. However, it is clear that a connection was needed to develop the overall poor picture of Sony, so that the article appeared to have substance.
In my opinion, biased writing belongs in a blog not in an article. Too often, authors forget to be objective and they come across as biased. Sadly though when someone points their bias they resort to “ab absurdo” in an effort to justify their position. As for the job offer, I must decline as I would be unable to conjure up articles that provided readers with informed facts. All I have is my opinion. Wait, maybe I would make a good author for your site?
ps: good use of the word ilk, and you even spelled it correctly…
Sony has been putting a lot of effort into the PS3 now, just looking at the wonderful titles that came out last year for the PS3, and all the titles that will be coming out for it next year. And yet, here we have another complaint.
I remember 2006 and 2007, “The PS3 has no games!” By the end of 2007, titles like Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, proved that the PS3 does have games!
Then, people were saying that “Playstation Home would never come” and now that is has, the recent complaints are about how it sucks, and I agree, it’s not that fun, but hey, I’m using it for what it is, it’s meant to be a social, interactive community, and for the most part it is. In my opinion, it’s not a game.
There have been many more complaints, more recently about how the PS3 didn’t do so well in 2008, despite Metal Gear Solid 4 selling over 4 million copies, PS3 beating Xbox 360 for the first half of the year, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet and many more exclusive games delivering a very good experience. Yes, I know PS3 hasn’t sold that good as Xbox 360, but it’s not failing, the tides have turned around now. PS3 is the better console, since when has sales decided which console is better? Sony could easily lower the price of the PS3 to $200, then lose lots of money, but eventually overtake the Xbox 360. And remember this, it’s not software that is driving the Xbox 360, nothing is driving it except it’s price.
Anyway, now we have another complaint, recent things about the Six-Axis Controller and how it isn’t doing it’s job, it’s all bullshit really.
What’s the next complaint? All arguments have been pretty much, proved wrong. Blu-ray is succeeding, PS3 has better games now and in the future, Playstation Home has come out, multi-platform games are equal on both systems. What’s next, huh?
Your article really means nothing, it’s just another complaint, out of jealousy. It’s ok, we all have these moments.
To u suck:We are not talking about world history here. And this article about Sony has nothing to do with seeing the world. It’s a journalistic opinion about the Six Axis controller.Give the author and this site some credit, everybody has their own opinion and you can’t change it.
