After a bouncy year with two immense highs (MGS4 and LittleBigPlanet), wondrous developments were revealed at the Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing in London this past Friday.
According to D+PAD, the Sony onslaught began with indications by SCEE President, David Reeves, that the PS3 will become more “competitively priced” from March of 2009. The February release of Killzone 2 appears to be contributing towards this. More PS3 and PSP innovations are on the cards, but nothing specific was revealed.
Two announcements defined the event: The first was LittleBigPlanet PSP, which has been in development for 4 months. Alex Evans, co-founder of Media Molecule, was initially reluctant to showcase the footage, saying, “It looked good, obviously not PS3 good, but missing the level of detail that you get in a final release”.
The second was the unveiling of God of War 3. Kratos is in fine form here,
battling skeletons and Cyclops’ before hijacking an eagle. The footage ends with Kratos dropping before a deep cave, presumed to be the entrance to Mount Olympus. There was initial confusion about the graphics being real-time or CG-based. Jaffe had previously stated 2010 as the targeted year of release for his “newest game”; whether this was GOW3 or not, is yet to be confirmed. Regardless, the footage looked stunning.
Other footage showcased included Uncharted 2 (which looks very similar to the original) and Motorstorm PSP.
