Insomniac Studios’ Resistance had you stomping brutal aliens to save a dust covered Europe from invasion, and it looks the sequel, Resistance 2, will have the same intense action with new gameplay additions. This game footage was recorded by a gamer currently involved in the Resistance beta-testing process available through MyResistance.net and showcases fast and furious co-op fighting. The footage is set in a forest-level, most likely the Californian Redwoods confirmed earlier. One noticeable thing in the footage was Experience Points (XP): Wounding an enemy and killing it earned the player XP points. Is this is a nod to Call of Duty 4’s excellent RPG style Perks system? The mention in the beginning of the video about playing as a soldier class indicates so.
The game seems more chaotic then its predecessor. The Grim, tall aliens that flail at you with their thin limbs, can be seen. Small, mechanical drones hover around the arena in packs. Alien warriors can be nimble, possessing lightning based attacks and rapid-fire weaponry like the player’s mini-gun-esque Wraith (reminiscent of the Mini-gun from Unreal Tournament, that could constantly be kept spinning to increase fire rate, but its secondary fire also acts as a shielded sentry gun). They’re also large and use tremendous green barriers mounted on their arms like shields and explosive weaponry against the player. The health is the typical recharging system which restores your vitality fully after a while if you’re badly wounded. Finally, the indicator at the top of the screen serves to highlight instructions and mission objectives for the player to follow.
On the right side of the screen, you can see the names of your various team-mates. This plays in important part in some portions: The player hides behind a comrade’s barrier while combating the heavy, shield-toting brutes. Other weapons seen were an explosive, Thumper-like weapon and a Shot-gun. For that extra touch, close-ups of alien faces and features, including body physics (dead bodies move when you hit them), have also been shown in the video.
The end of the footage shows the players going up against a massive alien carrying a large, napalm shooting weapon. Naturally, team-work wins the day… and snags some interesting detailed footage of alien innards, too.
Insomniac’s title is certainly looking good at this point of development. Confirmed to occupy a full 50 GB Blu-ray disc, this is one title PS3 fans should keep their eyes on.
