PS3 Portable: One Side, PSP

Filed under: Gaming News and Reportage No Responses

When Sony released the portable screen attachment for their first Playstation, fans immediately lapped it up. For once, there was a real 3D gaming solution on the go (of course, the PSX’s new, slimmer clam-shaped design wasn’t too shabby either).

ps3-laptop-by-pirate.jpgNaturally, with the PSP and the DS you’d think that we’re coming even closer to having home console quality titles in her hands. Then, some dude on the Net (referred to as ‘Pirate’ on PS3hax.net) goes ahead and builds this monster. Yes, that is an actual working PS3 in laptop form. It has a 17 inch LCD screen, built-in speakers and headphone jack, custom cooling, and weighs about 15 pounds, less than twice as much as the original XBox (how’s that for broken toes once dropped?).

ps3-laptop-by-ben-heck.jpgBut that’s not at all. Way back in April, Ben Heck, famous for fitting home consoles down in portable notebook designs, created his own PS3 laptop. It features a 17 inch LCD HDTV screen, a HDMI-DVI connection, USB ports, built-in speakers and cooling. The weight? Sixteen pounds. Forget fractures, that sounds like a glorified guillotine to us.

Yeah, the whole down-sizing of consoles may raise issues about practicality. After all, can you imagine not breaking the fold-up tray on an air-line trip with these babies? Nonetheless, it saves more space than your traditional home entertainment package. And if indication’s from Pirate are anything, expect smaller PS3 laptops in the months (and not years, we hope) to come.
