World of WoW: First Step

The First Step is the beginning of a series of articles about the enormously popular MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) developed by Blizzard. There are a number of things that make me stick to my computer screen through the nights without sleep and without studies. This is a Split-Screen version of a newbie’s guide to WoW. Welcome to my world.

azeroth.jpgWorld of Warcraft is one of the most successful of its kind to ever release worldwide. It released in the November of 2004. The game is set in the massive (and by massive I mean MASSIVE) world of Azeroth which is full of heroes, monsters and other creatures.

An expansion for the world – called The Burning Crusade, was released on January 16, 2007. It resulted in the ground breaking record of the fastest selling PC game. Almost 2.4 million copies of the game were sold off in North America and Europe on the release date itself.

I think that’s enough of history.

So what is so great about WoW? Why did it become the fastest selling PC game in the world? It has practically become a legal drug with millions of players playing at one go.

Fortunately, the game gets easier as you go. The first step in playing WoW has to be the hardest step. It’s selecting a race.

Currently, there are two playable factions in WoW – the Alliance and the Horde. Each comprises of five different races who can play a variety of classes.

The Horde consists of Orcs, Tauren, Trolls, The Undead Forsaken and the Blood Elves. The Alliance is made up of the Night Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Gnomes and Draenei.

Choosing a Race and a Class is very difficult in the beginning. One can be baffled by the number of races and classes available for each race. One can play as Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rouge, Shaman, Warlock and Warriors, all with their pros and cons.

It is for you to decide which race and class you want to play and mind you once you have made the decision of playing a class you will have to stick to it and one can’t change the race or the class of his/her character. You will have to make a new character to play another race or class.

night-elves.jpg

After you have done enough thinking and decided the race and class you want to play with you must select the server you want to play in. There are 3 kinds of gameplay type’s in WoW, PvP which is player versus player, where one can challenge other players into a duel and fight each other to the death, PvE which is player versus everyone, where one can PvP as well as and raid efficiently. And the last is a complete role playing environment where you can do quests and level, grouping with people, raiding and what not.In the coming weeks I will try and explain the basics of WoW gameplay and leveling for level 1 to level 70, sounds tough? Trust me it’s pretty easy. We will look into the basics about how to take advantage of the race and the class of each class.

Heh, I’m showing my age here: WoW sounds like Dungeons and Dragons.
I know, I know, there’s only so many different things you can do with a fantasy world and mythic creatures.

Imagine if someone were to make a Sims:Monsters expansion pack. You could visit elves and watch them bake cookies. Watch a drive-by dragon fight. Take the little werebear for a walk in the park.

Bah!

I look forward to the rest of this series!

Zork, anyone? :)

Cheers,

Mitch

The upcoming guide will be based on a particular private server.

This one —–> http://wowwtf.net/

We are planning to set up a small community for Indian Gamers for obvious reasons such as coinciding time zones and lingual freedom and above all some of the more experienced member such as your truly will be able to guide you through the game and help you along the way

But interaction is recommended. I just found a player from Hong kong who’ll be joining me in college in the US, so yeah its small world out there.

Look out for more articles !

NightWolf

Where did you dig up this trash from?

seriously… :) a simple google search would have helped you avoid looking like you are retarded.

since you wont get what I mean unless its spelt out:

“There are 3 kinds of gameplay type’s in WoW, PvP which is player versus player, where one can challenge other players into a duel and fight each other to the death, PvE which is player versus everyone, where one can PvP as well as and raid efficiently. And the last is a complete role playing environment where you can do quests and level, grouping with people, raiding and what not.”

I mean – how do you sleep at night after passing this nonsense off as “informed journalism”?

Since I am feeling generous I’ll clarify for any poor soul who reads your article and gets misled.

1st there are not three but FOUR kinds of servers to choose from:

PvE is the normal/standard server where the two factions can slug it out if they choose to – but to actually engage in battle against people you need to be “flagged” for PvP – which is a choice you make yourself.

PvP servers are similar to PvE servers in all respects but one. If you step into contested territory, you automatically get flagged for PvP and opposing faction players can hunt you down to their hearts content.

RP servers are like PvE servers – but with additional rules related to the kind of name a player or a guild can have – and rules regarding how to speak in public. The emphasis – as you hopefully picked up by now is on Role-Playing.

RPPVP servers are PvP servers with the additional RP rules added on.

Coming to your original contention that its “hard to pick a race and class” in WoW – i just have this to say: its fucking hard to decide what to eat for breakfast too.

Just ask yourself these questions and you have your choices laid out in front of you:
1st Choice – Are you going to be a pansy and pick alliance or have the balls for horde?
2nd Choice – Do you want to be a “Tank” class character? DPS? Healer? Nuker? (Thats pretty much the kind of classes you get in ANY RP game – no matter which one or where)

Pick a race that “look” like you could identify with the character (It really doesnt make a major difference in the end-game if you chose Orc over Tauren to be a fucking warrior – what matters is that you are a warrior with Season 3 gear who is capable of ripping through anything in front of him) – whats important is that you pick a race that has the class you want to play. NOT ALL RACES CAN PLAY AS ALL CLASSES.

why the fuck am i writing your “guide” for you?

go home and crawl under your bed – thats where you belong

dude listin its not very hard to write articles for WOW i know…with absolutly no retail experience iam writing this article…so either appreciate it or dont read…get it? its not very hard trust me..

Dear Nightwolf.

Would like to make something else evident, besides your obvious dearth or grey matter ? Sure you know the insides of the WoW Gameplay but if you had the time ( which i’m sure you did, considering you thought up that huge a rant ) you would notice that this was from his point of view, not yours, not the world’s. Though you may be ignorant to the fact that sometimes people to think about picking a race and yes it can be hard.Even choosing a class isn’t that easy , considering that you would have to play that race/class combination for a very long time ( If You are a gaming addict ). Now nobody would want to pick an “Ugly” class , which also why the Burning Crusade expansion brought so much hope to the Horde. And forget cosmetics, what about racials ? Racials can make all the difference in the world. A blood elf can silence a caster for 2 extra seconds, thats almost 5k damage with my rogue. An Undead can walk out of fear, ruining any warriors’ or priests’ hopes of turning the tables. Gnomes , with escape artist , essentially have another way or getting out of tight spots.

So you see my friend, not every decision is easy, and people do find a breakfast hard to pick out. I however can’t vouch for your insipid tast , apparently you have an ever so drab lifestyle.

Picking a class depends on your style of play. Warriors can tank….So can druids and paladins. Priests can heal .. SO can druids , shamans and paladins..And druids are far more efficient at it in my opinion. Nuker ? Mages and Warlocks fit the bill. Dps…Paladins, rogues, shamans, warriors, druids , Mages, Warlocks, Priests , Hunters all do it. If you’re going to be an arse and point out other’s mistakes, don’t be a lazy one and do a half assed job, because someone smarter will come along and shove your shit right up your arse.

If you have something to add , do it politely and don’t get your drawers in a bunch.

Maybe you play Horde because it gives your lacking pride ,a little boost. Makes you feel like a man , having a butt ugly charcater et all. You have absolutely no class, stereotyping a faction or the people who play it. And never underestimate an alliance, or you’ll end up dying to the rank 1 Arena Gnome Rogue , Me, nude.

Reagrds,
Shade

Dear Nightwolf.

Is there something in particular that you would like to make evident ? Besdies your obvious lack in grey matter.

Lets begin with a systematic analysis of your rant , shall we ?

Yes there are 4 Styles of Gameplay , but as mentioned our friend here doesn’t have the retail exprience to know that , and hence knows about the 3 most popular versions. And honeslty, how many people can fluently speak in an RP dialect ? On a private server? None , is the answer incase you’d offer to rebuke me, but lets move on then,

Now to regular chap like yourself, Racials seem to have no meaning. Now that amuses me , since you mentioned Season 3 , a pure PvP ( Arena) Set . Racials can make all the difference in an Arena battle. the Blood Elves’ Arcane Torrent , which can silence a caster for 2 seconds, can have an insane impact on the outcome, As can the the Undead’s Ability to simply stroll out of a fear effect or even a Gnome’s ability to clear all snare effects from him/herself. So I take it you wouldn’t know head or tail of what you’re talking about, Excused. And most evidently you seem to find breakfast repetitive probably live a very drab life. But ofcourse you aren’t to blame , its all the mutant bunnies’ doing. Moving on.

Alliance or Horde. Surely you have got to be joking. Any serious gamer would know that looks don’t change a thing. Stereotyping a whole faction and people who play its members is simply borderline ridiculous. If you think that Alliance players are immature , juvenile and extraordinarily unskilled , you haven’t fought the rank 1 Arena player of our server, a Gnome Warlock. And who cares about how they talk or the kind of language they use, as long as you’re roadkill you haven’t the right to say a word.

Again when you speak of Tank , are you talking about a Druid ? Warrior or a Paladin ? They all make wonderful tanks.
What of Dps ? All classes can Dps, each in their own way and have their own utility.
What of healers ? You surely aren’t speaking only of priests are you ? What ashame , i guess you worked really hard to put your stupidity up on display. What of Druids , shamans, paladins ? I believe a druid is , on a whole, a more efficient healer than a priest. What about pvp where you require a completely different role ? will working with a healer spec work? no it won’t, so what do you call that ? the term is H-Y-B-R-I–D..can you say that ? Hiii..brrrr…eeeeeed. Not say it coherently! C’mon lad, bring your A game. If you’re going to knitpick do it well! Stop giving me an opportunity to ruin a fellow flamer’s day, it makes me cry to see what a pitiful job you’ve done.

And if you have anything to say, which i doubt you do considering youe flawed interpretation , But still even if you HAVE TO!! , if it means fighting against your mother who insisits on feeding you while you’re still in your diapers ( did i mention adult?) , don’t do it in an incriminating manner, because its no good and some like me will come along and put you back in your place ,muffin.

So off to sleep sugar plum , tomorrow is a big day , in a world where chocolates and teddy bears are all you need. Now let the big boys be.
